Conference Background
The world is tightly wired by bacteria since the direct bacterial extracellular electron transfer is found. Asia-Pacific area is the origin of this fantastic finding, where Dr. Byung-Hong Kim from KIST for the first time reported the extracellular electron transfer using Shewanella at the end of 20th century. After two decades, more than 13,000 academic papers are published in the microbial electrochemistry and technology area, where AP area contributes ~50%. In 2009, ISMET was founded in PSU, USA and gathered the researchers a networking. Promising technologies such as microbial fuel cell, microbial electrolysis cell, microbial desalination cell, microbial electrochemical synthesis etc. are invented for a sustainable way of energy recovery from wastes. More importantly, the direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) enables an energy-efficient way of pollutant degradation in anaerobic microbial community, showing a great perspective of enhancing methane or hydrogen production in anaerobic digesters and showing potential application in wastewater treatment and field bioremediation. To exchange the most exciting progresses in this area, the regional ISMET conferences are organised once every two years.
AP-ISMET conference history:
      • 1st AP-ISMET conference (2012): Chaired by Prof. Yujie Feng at Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin, China
      • 2nd AP-ISMET conference (2014): Chaired by How-Yong Ng at National University of Singapore, Singapore
      • 3rd AP-ISMET conference (2016): Chaired by Tae-Ho Lee at Pusan National University, Busan, Korea
     • 4th AP-ISMET conference (2018): Chaired by S Venkata Mohan at Birla institute of Technology and Science, Goa, India
The 5th AP-ISMET will supply a high-level communication platform for researchers, engineers, and industries to have deep communication in this fantastic area. We sincerely invite you to attend the 5th AP-ISMET, which is to be held on July 16-18, 2021, Harbin, China.
